The WBCA Scholarship Award
Definition
This award is presented annually to two (2) women's basketball players
who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the sport of women's
basketball and to academic excellence. This award enables deserving
student-athletes to complete their undergraduate degrees or to begin
work on advanced degrees. Each award is in the amount of $1,000. Any
applicant is only eligible to win one (1) scholarship award.
Eligibility
All female basketball players in all four intercollegiate divisions (NCAA Division
I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA) are eligible for the WBCA
Scholarship Awards.
Criteria
* Student-athlete must be in their final year of basketball eligibility at a four-year institution
* The student-athlete must have an overall GPA of 3.5 or better (based on a 4.0 scale)
* The student-athlete must need only one more year of academic work to complete undergraduate degree;
or must be planning to continue to work on an advanced degree next fall.
* The student-athlete must be a credit to the sport of women's basketball both on and off the court.
* The scholarship dollars must be used to complete an undergraduate degree or to continue work towards
an advanced degree.
* The student-athlete must be a skilled basketball player who has been recognized with conference,
regional or national honors.
* Coach's recommendation for student-athlete (one page) which includes campus/community activities,
academic and athletic honors, and justification for earning award.
* Academic or department chairperson's letter of recommendation (one page)
Nomination
All active A and B WBCA member head coaches are eligible to nominate any individual who fits the above criteria.
Nomination forms are made available to all eligible members via the WBCA web site (WBCA.org) in January. A postcard is mailed no later than Dececmber directing our membership to the website for then nomination forms. All nominations must be submitted electronically through the WBCA's website. In addition to the nomination, the coach must include a recommendation commenting on campus and community activities, academic and athletic honors and justification for earning the award. A recommendation must also come from an academic advisor.
Selection
Each committee member will have access to view online submissions prior to their selection conference call. The committee holds a conference call to select the recipient, based upon the nomination forms and the supporting recommendations.
Presentation
The WBCA Scholarship Awards are presented annually by the WBCA CEO at the WBCA Awards Luncheon
during the WBCA National Convention.
