Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) presents
2008 Nike's So You Want To Be A Coach
Opening the door for young minority women
Tentative Schedule of Events (coming soon)
PURPOSE: The purpose of the Nike's So You Want To Be A
Coach workshop is to provide an educational and professional foundation for
minority female basketball players in order to better prepare them for entering
the coaching profession. Nike's So You Want To Be A Coach workshop is two and
a half days of superior programming. The goal is to increase the number of minority
female basketball players who aspire to coach. The coaching lessons shared with
these participants will assist in identifying, recruiting, and retaining minority
women in the profession of coaching.
QUALIFICATIONS: The program is made possible through the NCAA Matching
Grants for the Advancement of Minority Women Coaches. For qualification, the
potential candidate must have exhausted her final year of basketball eligibility
at a four-year institution OR has graduated within the past year. In addition,
the candidate's head coach has to nominate them, and must be an active WBCA
member.
2008 PROGRAM DETAILS: The workshop will be held April 4-6, 2008
during the WBCA National Convention in Tampa, Florida. The participants will
have the opportunity to meet and learn from some high level professionals, visit
the WBCA Exhibit Hall and attend NCAA open practices.
Each participant is honored with a certificate of completion, and their resumes
are placed on the WBCA Career and Resource website powered by Athleticlink.com,
a website career center listing candidates who desire a job in sports.
IMPORTANT FINANCIAL INFORMATION: Permissive legislation allows for Division
I (Bylaw 16.11.1.13), Division II (Bylaw 16.11.1.10) and Division III (Bylaw 16.11.1.14) institutions to pay
for a student-athlete's actual and necessary expenses to attend Nike's So You
Want To Be A Coach workshop.
The WBCA Board of Directors encourages all WBCA head coaches who have minority
female athletes interested in coaching women's basketball, to nominate their
players.
