ATLANTA, Ga. - The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) has announced the newest additions to the WBCA Executive Committee. Connecticut’s Geno Auriemma has been named the new Vice President and will begin his term in August 2007. Auriemma follows in the footsteps of Sherri Coale (Oklahoma) who will take the reins as WBCA President in August. Terri Mitchell of Marquette University has also been named to the Executive Committee as the Treasurer, taking over for Dianne Nolan (Fairfield). “We are proud to add Geno Auriemma and Terri Mitchell to the WBCA Executive Committee and are confident that they will each contribute tremendously to our Association,” said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. “I am anticipating yet another great year of women’s basketball, continuing and being able to work with such strong leadership.” Geno Auriemma, currently serving as a Division I/At Large member on the WBCA Board of Directors, will become only the third male president for the WBCA, after serving his term as vice president. Terri Mitchell will begin her second stint on the WBCA Board of Directors, after previously serving as the NCAA Division I Legislative Chair. The Vice President serves a two year term, and then is named the WBCA President to serve for another two years. The Vice President closes out their time on the Executive Committee with a final two-year term serving as the Past President representative. The Treasurer’s term is for three years. Nominees for the WBCA Board of Directors Executive Committee openings are selected by the WBCA nominating committee. They are then voted on by head coaches, assistant coaches and directors of basketball operations at Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA and JC/CC who are current members of the WBCA. Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game in all of its aspects as a sport for women and girls.
