WBCA Stands With The NABC To
Defeat Michigan's
Anti-Affirmation Action Proposal Number 2 |
||
| The Executive Committee of the Women's Basketball
Coaches Association (WBCA) has joined the National Association of Basketball
Coaches (NABC) to show opposition of Michigan's Proposal 2 -The Michigan
Civil Rights Initiative (MCRI). This proposal will appear on the November
7th ballot in the state of Michigan. The passage of this proposition would
ultimately destroy the opportunities for the colleges in Michigan to have
an avenue to assure their colleges a diverse population. In addition Proposal
2 is camouflaged as a civil rights proposition but unfortunately it is unfairly
titled. Proposal 2 will end affirmative action if passed.
"The WBCA has always supported affirmative action, just as we have fought for 35 years to maintain Title IX," said WBCA President Doug Bruno. "I urge all of my fellow coaches and good citizens in the state of Michigan to defeat Michigan's Proposal 2 and continue to fight". "We have seen what has happened in the state of California when affirmative action was removed less than 10 years ago," WBCA CEO Beth Bass expressed. "It amazes me that it is a constant struggle to remind people to do the right thing". Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game in all of its aspects as a sport for women and girls.
