ATLANTA, Ga. - The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced today that Collins Hill High School senior Maya Moore (Suwanee, Ga.) has been named the 2007 State Farm/WBCA High School Player of the Year. The WBCA presents this award annually to the top players in each of the five WBCA collegiate divisions (NCAA Divisions I, II, III, NAIA and JC/CC) and high school. “The WBCA is proud to present Maya Moore with the 2007 State Farm/WBCA High School Player of the Year Award,” said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. “I have enjoyed watching her since she was an eighth grader here in Atlanta and knew that she was destined to be a State Farm/WBCA Player of the Year. I am sure that if she continues on this trajectory, she will be one of our future prestigious State Farm Wade Trophy recipients.” Able to run both the guard and forward spot on the floor, Moore holds her own at either position averaging nearly 26 points and 11 boards per game. Moore has helped to lead the Collins Hill Eagles to two straight state titles. Moore holds a total of 12 records in the Collins Hill books, including most rebounds in a career (837 as a junior), most points scored in a season (741), most points scored in a game (40), most points scored in a career (1874 as a junior) and most steals in a season (174). Look for these records to increase as the Eagles continue their quest to win a state and national title this season. Moore’s ever-growing list of accolades includes player of the year honors from Gwinnett County and Atlanta Tip Off. She also received the highest honor in Georgia as she was named “Miss Georgia Basketball”, as well as the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s “Miss Georgia Basketball”. Other accolades include first team Street & Smith All-American, Hoopgurlz.com Preseason National Player of the Year, Under-18 USA National Team Gold Medal winner, Parade Magazine First Team All-American and recipient of the Nike Tournament of Champions Sportsmanship Award. Moore has signed with Connecticut where she will follow the path of last year’s State Farm/WBCA High School Player of the Year, Tina Charles. "Congratulations to State Farm/WBCA High School Player of the Year Maya Moore," said Mark D. Gibson, Assistant Vice President of Advertising at State Farm. "Her outstanding accomplishments as a student-athlete make her truly deserving of this wonderful honor. We look forward to seeing Maya fulfill the rest of her basketball dreams." The State Farm/WBCA Player of the Year Award is selected by the nine-member WBCA High School Player of the Year Committee, which consists of one WBCA-member coach from each of the nine WBCA high school districts. Moore will be formally honored on Saturday, March 31, during the WBCA’s High School All-America Game presented by Nike at Cleveland State University’s Woodling Gym in Cleveland, Ohio. She will also be competing in the game, which is part of the 2007 WBCA National Convention held in conjunction with the NCAA® Women's Final Four®.
