HANA PELJTO AND JENNIE LILLIS TO RECEIVE WBCA SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) has selected Harvard's Hana Peljto and Iowa's Jennie Lillis as the 2004 WBCA Scholarship Award winners. These awards are presented annually to two women's basketball players in any of the five WBCA collegiate divisions (NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, and Junior College/Community College) who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the sport of women's basketball and to academic excellence. The awards enable deserving student-athletes to complete their undergraduate degrees or to begin work on advanced degrees. Each award is in the amount of $1,000.

"On behalf of the WBCA, I would like to congratulate Hana and Jennie on their commitment to academics," said CEO Beth Bass. "They are very deserving of this award and the WBCA is proud to be able to assist in their educational endeavors."

Peljto and Lillis will be formally presented their awards during the State Farm Wade Trophy and State Farm/WBCA Players of the Year Luncheon, presented by Jostens at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. The awards luncheon is a part of the 2004 WBCA National Convention held in New Orleans, Louisiana, held in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Women's Final Four.

Peljto has been named first team All-Ivy for four consecutive years scoring more than 2,000 points and over 900 rebounds in her collegiate career. She has tied Harvard's record for points scored in a game with 39. She was unanimously voted Ivy League Player of the Year twice and received Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2000-01. Peljto has also earned first team Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for two consecutive years.

Iowa's Lillis earned All-Big Ten second team honors this season, selected to the team by both the media and coaches. She has totaled over 1,700 points and 800 rebounds as a Hawkeye. This season, she ranked seventh in scoring and eighth in assists in the conference and leads the Hawkeyes in rebounds. Also successful in the classroom, Lillis was named an Academic All-Big Ten selection last season. She has been co- or tri-captain of the squad since her sophomore season.

Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game in all of its aspects as an amateur sport for women and girls.
