Betty F. Jaynes Receives Proclamation from Newton County Board of Commissioners

ATLANTA, Ga. (September 2, 2003) -- Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) co-founder and former CEO, Betty F. Jaynes, added another accolade to her list of achievements on Tuesday, September 2, 2003, when she was honored at the Newton County Board of Commissioners meeting at the Newton County Judicial Center.

Jaynes, along with B.C. Crowell, chairman of the Newton County Recreation Commission and Ron Bradley, head boys basketball coach at Newton High School, were recognized for their outstanding contribution to sports in the Newton County community.

Renowned as the "Godmother of Women's Basketball", Jaynes was a student at Newton High School, where she led the girls basketball team to the state championship game in 1963. Encouraged by fellow honoree, Ron Bradley, she later contributed her knowledge and skill as a coach from 1970 to 1982 (James Madison University). Eventually leading her to be named executive director of the WBCA in 1981 and becoming the first chief executive officer in 1996.

For her commitment to serving women's basketball for over 25 years, Newton County, Georgia proclaimed September 3, 2003 to be recognized as "Betty Faith Jaynes Day".

"It's very rewarding to let my roots come back and reward me for what I have done and for being a native of Newton County," said Jaynes.

Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game in all of its aspects as an amateur sport for women and girls.
