2003 WBCA Board of Directors MeetingThe Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) held its annual summer Board of Directors Meeting August 14th and August 15th at the WBCA National Office in Atlanta, Georgia. Presiding over the meeting was WBCA President, Wendy Larry, Head Coach at Old Dominion. Those in attendance were: WBCA Staff: WBCA Board of Directors: Not in Attendance: Over the two-day period, the Executive Committee and Board of Directors discussed the following:
Special guests were Dr. M. Dianne Murphy, Director of Athletics and Recreation at the University of Denver and Chair of the NCAA Women's Basketball Issues Committee; Cheryl Marra, Associate Athletics Director at the University of Wisconsin and Chair of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee; Donna Noonan, Vice President for NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship; and Michelle Perry, Director for NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship. Dr. Murphy discussed the priorities the Women's Basketball Issues Committee is focusing on. These priorities were determined, based upon research conducted by Dr. Murphy and the Women's Basketball Issues Committee. Dr. Murphy contacted 100 Division I women's basketball coaches from all levels and formulated that the issues to examine were marketing and promotions, quality of the game, recruiting and student-athlete welfare. Subcommittees were then formed to focus on these issues. Research focus groups were conducted during the NCAA Women's Final Four. These included the WBCA High School All-Americans, WBCA All-Star Challenge participants, and Selected Division I Conference Captains. A focus group was held at both NACDA and NACWAA. Additional information was needed on the marketing and promotions aspect, resulting in marketing surveys being sent to all Division I institutions. The next Women's Basketball Issues Committee meeting is set for September 8-9 in Indianapolis. Cheryl Marra, Chair of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee; Donna Noonan, Vice President for NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship; and Michelle Perry, Director for NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship discussed hot topics such as pre-determined sites, pre-assigning officials during the championship, and other items with the Board. Marra then went on to discuss and educate the WBCA Board on how the 64 Division I teams and their brackets are selected. This presentation, known as "Bracketology" began with how the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee prepares; what factors are and are not influential in the process; principles and procedures; the process of balloting; and then seeding and bracketing. The NCAA provided an interactive portion of their presentation where the Board members were able to take the top 64 teams and place them in the bracket similar to what the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee would do in March. Stay tuned next month for all the highlights from the 2003 WBCA Board of Directors meeting.
