Gettin' Down with Coretta Brown
By: Summer Thagard, WBCA Manager of Communications
You may wonder, "What exactly do WNBA players do during the off-season?"
Some go overseas, some travel across the country, while others spend much-needed
time with their friends and family. None of these seemed to catch the attention
of Coretta Brown, who plays for the WNBA Indiana Fever. Instead, Brown decided
to take part in the internship program that the WNBA offers during the off-season.
After debating a long list of choices, Brown decided to take full advantage
of the internship that would best compliment what both she and the organization
were looking for. Being named the WNBA intern in November, Brown has already
gotten her feet wet acquiring very tedious tasks including but not limited to
membership renewals, ticket sales, Kodak/WBCA All-America Team updates and securing
exhibitors for convention.
"I went overseas one year and traveled all over Spain, Russia and China,
but it wasn't the right fit for me," Brown said. "I felt that this
would be a good opportunity for professional development and to interact with
coaches on a day-to-day basis."
With hopes of one day being a coach once her playing days are over, Brown looks
to develop the relationships that she needs to establish herself professionally
and also acquire the skill-set needed to build a firm foundation in the world
of coaching. "I want to be a huge sponge while I am at the WBCA learning
the ins and outs of the game, how marketing ties into coaching and how to view
basketball from a totally new perspective," Brown said.
Brown played in the 1999 WBCA High School All-America game. Following the legacy
that she left behind at Southeast Bulloch High School, Brown chose to join the
Tarheels at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. An African-American
Studies major, Brown feels that her greatest accomplishment has been graduating
college.
"On the court, my greatest accomplishment was hitting the game winning
shot against Maryland. Off the court, by far I would say graduating from college
was my greatest accomplishment," Brown said.
Despite a recent battle with coming back from knee surgery, Brown's competitiveness
and support is what motivates her to continue in her path of success. "My
entire family have always been my number one fans both on and off of the court
and they push me to always do my best," Brown said. "My competitiveness
is one of the best qualities that I bring to the table. Both of these aspects
have gotten me where I am today."
"Next year I will have a more mature and greater appreciation for the
game," Brown said. "Once you are hindered by any obstacle, you learn
that you can't take the gifts and talents that you have for granted. They may
not be there tomorrow."
When not working hard at the WBCA or putting in hours at the gym, Brown likes
to find down time to relax and shop. You will also find her catching every episode
of Girlfriends and Extreme Makeover. "I enjoy just chillin'. It's a form
of art to me," Brown said. "Shopping, lounging, watching movies and
hanging out with friends are my favorite things to do."
Besides family and friends, another huge part of Brown's life is her faith.
After growing up in the church, she gets by each day recalling the words of
Philippians 4:13: "For I can do all things through Christ who strengthens
me."
"I feel that through Christ, if I have faith, the sky is the limit,"
Brown said.
With all that Brown has behind her and still so much ahead, she is definitely
right about that.
