Association Updates

Voting ends for select DI awards. Voting ends for the NCAA DI National Coach of the Year Award and Coaches’ All-America Team at noon ET Monday, March 9.

National Talking Points. The WBCA Board of Directors Branding Working Group has provided all collegiate members with talking points that coaches are encouraged to use during the month of March. Coaches should also promote “Our Game” by encouraging fans to attend postseason tournaments in their areas regardless of who is playing.

2015 Convention

Non-refundable hotel deposit. Starting this week, the credit card on file for your reservation at a WBCA hotel will be charged a non-refundable deposit equal to the amount of the minimum night stay. Click on WBCA housing policy for full details.
   
Graduate Assistant coaching positions. Please email your name, school and division to if you have a Graduate Assistant position open for the 2015-16 season and would like to speak with participants in the “So You Want To Be A Coach” program in Tampa.

Division I committee chairs appointed. The NCAA Division I Council appointed chairs for each of the seven standing committees that will report to it on Feb. 20.

Kay Yow Cancer Fund

"Thank you" to Play 4Kay participants.  The Kay Yow Cancer Fund thanks each of you for your commitment to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. To be eligible for the Play 4Kay divisional contest, please submit donations or a confirmed total to the Fund by Monday, March 16.

Moms in Coaching. Moms in Coaching is a group formed with the purpose of equipping and encouraging basketball coaches at any level who are moms, or moms-to-be. The group will provide an opportunity for moms to connect, give and receive advice, feedback and support during #wbca15. Email if interested.

Nancy Winstel receives WBCA's Jostens-Berenson Lifetime Achievement Award. Nancy Winstel who served as a head coach for 32 years is the recipient of the 2015 WBCA Jostens-Berenson Lifetime Achievement Award.

Stiles, McCray-Penson selected to National High School Hall of Fame. Jackie Stiles and Nikki McCray-Penson are two of the 12-members of the 2015 class of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) National High School Hall of Fame.

Andy Zihlman reaches 900 win mark. Bishop Lynch coach Andy Zihlman earned his 900th victory when the Lady Friars beat Bishop Dunne 44-32 on Feb. 20.

Bill Fennelly notches 600th career victory. Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly recorded his 600th career win on Feb. 28 with the Cyclones’ 76-71 win over then No. 3 Baylor.

Mark Campbell collects number 500. Union University coach Mark Campbell picked up his 500th win on Feb. 12 with a 77-66 victory over Valdosta State.

Folsom acquires win number 300. On Feb. 23 Benedictine (Kan.) beat Missouri Valley College 82-70 giving Chad Folsom his 300th career win with the Ravens.

Lindsay Gottlieb records 100th victory as Cal’s head coach. Lindsay Gottlieb posted her 100th victory as the head coach of California on Feb. 26 with the Bears 74-59 win against Oregon.

Mike Bradbury earns 100th win at Wright State. Wright State defeated Detroit on Feb. 26 to give Mike Bradbury his 100th win as the Raiders’ coach.

Did you know?

Most points scored in a girls’ high school basketball game. Heading into the 2014-15 season the most points scored in a high school girls basketball game was 240 points in a game between Gladbrook-Reinbeck (Iowa) and West Marshall (Iowa) in 2011.  Gladbrook-Reinbeck beat West Marshall 122-118.
